Palm oil is one of the most versatile, productive and contentious commodities. Present in roughly 20% of all supermarket packaged products, it’s the world’s most land-efficient oil crop, and when grown responsibly, can be one of the most sustainable options.
That amazing efficiency has come at environmental cost: as the industry expanded, lots of forest across SE Asia was cleared for plantations. As a result, it has a poor reputation for sustainability to this day.
That perception no longer matches the reality, thanks to the collective work done by RSPO, governments around the world and forward thinking organisations across the supply chain over the past 25 years.
But while the industry is very, very different, communicating that progress is one of the main challenges still facing the palm oil industry.
Which is one of the key reasons why One Nine Nine will be heading to this year’s Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil in Jakarta, so we can make a difference and help influence perceptions of sustainable palm oil in the West.
The two-day summit includes everyone from smallholder farmer cooperatives to multinational FMCGs. Having attended the 2024 conference, we’re looking forward to returning to Southeast Asia to connect with our clients, attend key panel sessions and speak directly with the stakeholders shaping the next chapter of sustainable agriculture.

To get a little preview of what to expect, check out Barnaby’s recent appearance on RSPO’s official podcast, The Palm Pod. In it, he discusses how global palm oil narratives are formed, why the commodity remains vulnerable to public misconceptions and what businesses can do to communicate their sustainability milestones more effectively.
