Why Observe Key Dates as a Business?

  • To engage your customers and community with relevant and current events
  • To help unite your customers and community through days that people connect and identify with
  • To help create a sense of urgency amongst customers (these celebrations happen for a limited time, which generates a feeling of immediacy to take part in or consume content)
  • They are an opportunity for exposure. It’s worth noting that key dates often have their own hashtag, so make sure to use this when posting about them on social media to help new followers discover you!

Here are some key dates to add to your business calendar this October:

1st - 31st October - Black History Month #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryMonth2022

What is Black History Month?
'An opportunity to be part of the national celebrations and events to honour the too-often unheralded accomplishments of Black Britons in every area of endeavour throughout our history.’'

Ways to observe:

  • Support Black owned businesses and share recommendations online
  • Create a Black History Month playlist or reading list that celebrates Black artists/authors
  • Donate to charities that support equality
  • Host or participate in an interactive event that celebrates Black figures and their contributions
  • Amplify Black voices on social media
  • Bring in speakers or hold a panel discussion about topics surrounding Black identity (in person or online)

1st October - World Vegetarian Day #WorldVegetarianDay

What is World Vegetarian Day?
‘Recognises the life enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism’

Ways to observe:

  • Go meat free for the day/week/month, or celebrate ‘meat-free Mondays’
  • Support a local vegetarian business (or go for a vegetarian team lunch with your co-workers!)
  • Create awareness of vegetarian nutrition and how it can benefit you and the environment

8th October - Universal Music Day #UniversalMusicDay

What is Universal Music Day? 
‘A global celebration that embodies the freedom and self-expression of music’

Ways to observe:

  • Attend a Universal Music Day concert or music event (or plan one of your own)
  • Create a Universal Music Day playlist
  • Create a themed podcast episode or write a blog about Universal Music Day

10th October - World Mental Health Day #WorldMentalHealthDay

What is World Mental Health Day?
'A chance to talk about mental health, how we need to look after it, and how important it is to talk about things and get help if you are struggling. The theme of 2022's World Mental Health Day, set by the World Federation for Mental Health, is 'Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority.’

Ways to observe :

  • Hold a World Mental Health Day seminar and invite a mental health coach to speak
  • Organise a team outing or team building activity
  • Create a themed podcast episode or write a blog about World Mental Health Day
  • Make it a holiday 
  • Promote your business’ mental health benefits 
  • Educate your team/followers with mental wellbeing workshops and activities

16th October - World Food Day #WorldFoodDay

What is World Food Day?
‘World Food Day is not only about celebrating the amazing food that people have the privilege of indulging in, but it is about raising awareness for people who do not have such privilege.’

Ways to observe:

  • Make a donation to food bank or charity
  • Attend a world food day event (or host your own) 
  • Create a plan to cutdown on food waste within your business (and share this with your followers on social media)
  • Launch a promotion/giveaway or share recipes with your followers (if you’re a food-related business)

24th October - Diwali #Diwali #HappyDiwali #Diwali2022

What is Diwali?
‘The five-day Festival of Lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world.’

Ways to observe:

  • Learn about the history of Diwali through an interactive activity, like a quiz
  • Challenge your co-workers/followers to do a good deed for the day
  • Enjoy symbolic foods with your co-workers, or share symbolic recipes with your followers
  • Keep Diwali in mind when planning meetings and deadlines

30th October - British Summer Time Ends

31st October - Halloween #Halloween #Halloween2022
